Queries to handle Local Extent Management and Tempfiles

by Jeff Hunter, Sr. Database Administrator

Prior to Oracle8i, all tablespaces were created as Dictionary Managed. To track space utilization using Dictionary Managed tablespaces, Oracle relys on SQL data dictionary tables. Begining with Oracle8i, the DBA can now create Locally Managed Tablespaces which use bitmaped indexes (instead of the SQL data dictionary tables) to track used and free space.

Also introduced in Oracle8i is the idea of "tempfiles" used to create Temporary Tablespaces.

These changes though makes it more difficult to query information like size and space usage. Provided below are links to several scripts that can be used to query both tablespace and datafile space usage.

Scripts Example Output
    Data/Tempfile Space Usage     file_space_usage.lst
    Data/Tempfile Usage     file_use.lst
    Tablespace Usage     tablespaces.lst
    Data/Tempfile I/O     file_io.lst
